Construction
Two sheets of plexiglass with brass screws (shown above) were used to hold the guts of the latop. The total price tag for this was ~$15 at homedepot for the screws, nuts, washers and plexiglass. To mount the laptop mainboard, motherboard mounting standoffs were used. The LCD is held on to the by four screws with four machine bolts.
There are plenty of software options for viewing images, most people who use linux use feh. This one is using glimageviewer which is part of xscreensaver. It does a nice fade in/out of the images and although feh has a lot of feature the effects aren’t as nice. The only customization needed for the linux install is to set it to kick off the screensaver immediately and a small mofication to /usr/bin/xscreensave-getimage-file to reload the image cache frequently.

A picture frame about to get busy..
